Starting your child in hockey for the first time can feel like a lot; new terminology, new gear, a new schedule. That's completely normal, and every hockey parent has been exactly where you are. What you'll find on the other side of that first season is worth it. Kids build a genuine love for a fantastic sport, and the friendships they form with teammates often last well beyond their playing days.

When does registration happen?
Registration typically opens in July and runs into mid-August, ahead of the upcoming season.

When does the season run?
The season runs from September through March.

What's the difference between house league and competitive hockey?
House league is non-checking at all ages, and every registered player is guaranteed a spot. Competitive (rep) hockey involves tryouts, and not every player who tries out will make a team; competitive also remains non-checking until players reach a certain age level, after which checking is introduced.

Does my child need previous experience to join?
No previous experience is needed. Even if your child can't skate, or can't skate well yet, it won't take long. After a few practices and games they'll start to get the hang of it.

What equipment does my child need to get started?
A full kit includes: a stick, helmet with full cage or shield, neck guard, gloves, shoulder pads, shin pads, jock/jill, skates, and a pair of hockey socks. At sort-outs, players receive a practice jersey, and the association provides game socks and a game jersey before the season starts.

Several sport stores and hockey specialty stores in the Stittsville/Kanata area can help you get outfitted. It's worth noting that some equipment, helmets in particular,   must meet certification standards and has a shelf life, after which it's no longer considered compliant, so it's a good idea to check the age of any hand-me-down or used gear. Many stores offer complete starter kits in a bag geared toward younger players, and some also offer resale/used equipment at a lower cost. We'd encourage you to visit one of these stores and mention it's your child's first year; staff are usually very helpful in getting new families set up.

What is the minmum age to register and play hockey?
RMMHA provides programming for children as young as 4 years old. A player's age is calculated based on how old they'll be by December 31 of the year registration takes place.

How much does registration cost, and is financial help available?
